Prostrate Cancer & Colorectal Cancer Screening
in fact, prostate cancer is the fourth most common reason overall for death of African American men.
All men are at risk for prostate cancer, but African American men are more likely to get prostate cancer than other men. Out of every 100 American men, about 13 will get prostate cancer during their lifetime, and about 2 to 3 men will die because of it.
Did you know that African Americans in the US are also at a higher risk of developing colon cancer? We were shocked when we lost actor Chadwick Boseman to colon cancer at age 43. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States.
The age to start screening for colorectal cancer has been lowered to 45 years old.
Almost 70% of patients have no family history so, your family history could begin with you.
Colonoscopy is one way to be screened, but a less invasive method, "a stool sample", is another way. I've had both screenings said Richard L Gant President & CEO The RL Gant Group Inc. Recently, my gastroenterologist, Dr. Timothy Johnson, suggested that because I had a recent heart condition, we could use a company called Cologuard to get a stool sample. It was really simple to do, return it for his diagnosis and the results were fast. Dr. Johnson called me within days and discussed the results with me.
Screening
Like going to the dentist or changing the oil in your car, cancer screening should be a regular part of your life. Screening tests are used before a person has any symptoms to help find cancer early, when it may be easier to treat.
